Veterans receive free dental care from MSU Texas students

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — When it comes to healthcare, dental coverage is something many veterans go without, but this week MSU Texas is working to close that gap.

The university’s dental hygiene clinic is offering veterans free dental cleanings, x-rays and sealants. Many hygienists say the need among veterans is far greater than many people realize.

All services are performed by dental hygiene students under the supervision of licensed faculty and a dentist, giving them a chance to a chance to give back while they gain experience.

“We get to see something that maybe someone like a regular civilian may not have. So, we get to work with different patients with different backgrounds and different types of families. So, we get to hear stories and just kind of see where they’re from. And maybe they have restorations done in a different country, you know, and we can kind of see just what they have and how we’re able to treat them”, said Kennedy Thomas, MSU dental student.

“It’s just a never-ending cycle. If you continue the cycle, then there’s going to be people that are brought up to continue to want to give back. It’s not, it’s never going to stop. So, I think that’s a really positive culture to have, just a never-ending culture that continues to give back and wants to give back”, said Jessa Burk, MSU dental student.

These free services are a part of a tradition that the program continues each year to honor the men and women who served.

“It’s hard for them to have access to dental care. The VA hospital is very overrun. So, for us to be able to provide these services here in this community, especially with the air force being here and the army base, being right there in Lawton, it’s a great thing for us to be able to do for veterans because they have a hard time getting that dental care access.”, Said Jill Young, Chair and President of Gaines Dental Hygiene Clinic.

You can call and make your appointment directly at (940) 397-4737 or (940) 397-4764.

The clinic is offering services through Thursday with availability in mornings and evenings. If you’re a veteran and they can’t fit you in this week, they will still honor the offer as long as you call by Friday.
